Momma Cuisine’s Food Travels – One Night’s Stay in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is just a couple of hours north of Chicago and a beloved playground and quick getaway for many Chicagoans. Celebrities, politicians, dignitaries, socialites and families alike flock to Lake Geneva and even call it home for their vacation cottages and cabins.

On this Memorial Day weekend, my husband and I decided to stay only one night in Lake Geneva – ALONE! We’ve never traveled to Lake Geneva without the kids and at first, I felt a bit guilty for not taking them along. But, like many busy couples, my husband and I were craving some time alone (ahem) and do some adult activities – like order lots of wine and talk all night!

The Baker House was recommended by a friend. I was so happy to see that The Baker House was right next door to our hotel, so I can easily stumble back “home” without any trouble. Hahaha! I was so pleasantly surprised about what a truly unique dining experience it was to visit The Baker House. We came in at 4:30 P.M. and didn’t leave until 9:00 P.M.! That is unheard of in modern day dining experiences. Guests were encouraged to pick up one of the hundreds of period hats and head pieces displayed throughout the home, where rooms and parlors were masterfully turned into cozy dining rooms. Then at around 7:45 P.M (or close to sunset), the bell tower rung to summon guests to the garden overlooking gorgeous Lake Geneva, a sunset toast was prepared for the entire restaurant by the owner’s themselves. This evening, was an especially an important celebration as it was the very first toast of the season. Imagine our luck! I highly recommend The Baker House as a must-visit when you visit Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

The next day, we had breakfast at a local favorite, Simple Cafe. We had a leisurely walk from the lake inland on Broad Street where the restaurant was located. Walking through the tree-lined streets and window shopping at boutiques, churches and homes was a nice treat on a quiet Sunday morning.

Simple Cafe is just that, simple. Fresh foods featuring Wisconsin artisans, simple yet vibrant decor in the interior and exterior where the food was the star. The menu highlights breakfast classics, but also has fun with delicious creations like Korean Breakfast Bowl, which bowl I licked. The other two menu items we tried was the Maple Glazed Bacon on top of Caramelized Onions, melted Gruyere Cheese and French Toast (I KNOW!), and their Simple Benedict that puts a fun twist on the classic Eggs Benedict by putting the poached eggs atop fried polenta squares and a creole holandaise sauce.
