5 Dishes You Have to Try When You Visit Thailand

If you’re going to Thailand, there are so many things to be excited about. The food is most definitely one of them. Loved all over the world, Thai dishes are known for having amazing flavors, ingredients, and diversity.

1. Tom Yum 

Tom Yum is a famous hot and sour soup. It’s full of fresh ingredients such as lemongrass, lime juice, fish sauce, kaffir lime leaves, and chili peppers. The soup is warming and delicious and is said to be refreshing in the Thai humid heat. The soup usually has shrimp in it, but depending on where you are, other proteins might be used in the soup. 2. Som Tum 

Som Tum, also known as green papaya salad, is a cold yet spicy staple in Thai food. This salad is made with unripe papaya sliced thinly into edible strips, beans, chili peppers, fish sauce, brined crab, and so many other ingredients. While it’s typically made with a lot of chilis, and therefore can be incredibly spicy, you can ask for it mild. This refreshing and crisp dish is a must try when walking about a Thai food market in the sweltering heat!

3. Gaeng Daeng 

Gaeng Daeng is Thailand’s famous and spicy, red curry. This curry is hotter than yellow curry but is still beaten by green curry when it comes to spice. It’s made from Thai red chilis and chili powder, as well as ginger, garlic, coconut milk, lime leaves, and other ingredients. It’s extremely flavorful and usually cooked with some sort of meat and served with rice. Trying this is definitely something you should have on your to-do list in Thailand. 

4. Pad Thai

Pad Thai is a widely popular dish outside of Thailand, and even more popular in its home country. Pad Thai is a stir-fry noodle dish made with classic Thai flavors. This dish is sour and nutty, with a hint of sweetness, and is topped with crunchy bean sprouts and peanuts. You can also choose almost any meat to have with it. If you want to try Pad Thai that’s the real deal, come try it when you visit! 

5. Panang Goong

Also known as Panang curry with shrimp and vegetables, this dish is perfect if you’re a tourist. Thai food can be intimidating to those who aren’t used to it, especially if you don’t consider yourself a very adventurous eater. Panang Goong is great because you can try Thailand’s world-famous curry and not feel uncomfortable from the level of spice. While it still has a kick to it, its mild. The curry is sweet and has a nutty shrimp flavor to it. It’s definitely worth trying if spice isn’t your thing.
