5 Expensive Home Electrical Problems and How to Avoid Them

The electrical wiring in your home is not something you want to mess with on your own or ignore. For those who have no experience with electricity other than flipping a switch, the right time to call professionals is when you determine you have an issue. If that issue is an expensive one, that is even more reason to reach out to someone that can help.

1. Lights Flicker When It’s Windy

This means there is frayed wiring in the weatherboard. This is located outdoors and is where the lines come into the home. That means frayed wiring can arc, a fire can ensue and the residents are in danger of injury or death. The home can also be lost. This is a necessary issue to resolve. It can be done by having the weatherboard replaced. It isn’t an expensive resolution, just the potential outcome that can get pricey.

2. Lack of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters

Baths and kitchens have an increased risk of shutting down the power. If there are no GFCIs in place, then things can get dangerous. For those houses that have old receptacles and no GFCIs, it is wise to replace said receptacles with GFCIs. This can be done by the homeowner, although it can be tricky for those with no experience. Trust a professional to get the job done right and in a timely manner, even if it may cost more to have it done that way.

3. Aluminum Wiring

This cheap substitute was used in the 1960’s and 70’s in the US. This problem means danger for the residents and requires retrofitting nuts that are approved for aluminum wire. This also requires replacement switches and receptacles are double-checked to be AL-compatible.

The idea to upgrade from older wiring to new can be appealing. However, that may be the most expensive alternative, and it may not be an option for now. Resolve what you can, and maybe in the future you can revisit the idea of replacing the wiring.

4. Backstabbed Wires are a Fire Hazard

For those wires in the back that come loose because they are pushed in rather than anchored around screws, the danger could result in a fire and loss of your home. The solution for this potentially expensive issue is removing switches and receptacles to check for these situations. Refit the wires to attach to appropriate screw terminals.

5. Faulty Wiring

The discovery of knob-and-tube wiring, which is common in older homes, can mean a big hit to your bank account. There are a number of safety issues, including the fact the circuit is not grounded. Therefore, this discovery tends to lead to recommendations to replace the entire electrical wiring system throughout the home. This means big bucks for you, the homeowner.
