Food Waste and How You Should Dispose of It

They can either be discarded in the bin or even washed down the drain. But, a lot of problems can occur from discarding food waste in the wrong way. Pasta and Rice

We have all been in this position. You are washing the dishes after having rice or pasta and there are some leftovers on the plate. You are tired after a long day and you simply let these foods wash down the drain. It is not a big deal, right? Unfortunately, it can be a huge deal and one that causes you a lot of problems. Namely, pasta and rich are starchy foods that can block your drains.

A lot of people do not realize that foods like pasta and rice are able to cause serious drainage problems. But, while it may seem a soft and innocent ingredient, it actually is very slimy and it swells up with water exposure. This means that over time, it is able to able to cause a blockage in the pipes that does not allow any water through. This can mean that water does not drain away and you will notice a foul smell as it begins to rot.

The best thing you can do is pour any pasta and rice away in the bin. While this can seem like a hassle at the time, it can save you a lot of money and energy later on. You will thank yourself later when you do not have to deal with a blocked drain.


Cooking Oil

While it is not food, cooking oil is an essential ingredient in a lot of dishes. This is particularly true when you are frying something. Just like other things on our list, cooking oil has to be disposed of carefully. Unfortunately, a lot of people experience drain blockages because they choose to wash cooking oil away down the sink. Later on, this can stick to the pipes and cause a blockage. This will mean that you have to hire a drain unblocking service to come to your home and solve the problem.

So, how should you dispose of cooking oil? Well, instead of washing it away in the sink, you want to let it cool down. In particular, you want it to solidify somewhere that is not in your pipes. This way, you can simply put it in a bag when it is hard and throw it in the bin. This is going to stop the cooking oil from causing you any problems.


Meat Fats

When you are cooking meat, there can be a lot of fats that come off it. Just like cooking oil, this can seem like a harmless liquid. But, it really can cause a lot of problems when it comes to drains. When fats have been cooked and they are warm, they are in a liquid state. But, when they cool down, they solidify and become sticky. If this happens in your pipes, you are going to have a lot of problems.

In order to avoid a drain blockage, you need to allow the fats from meat to cool down before it is cleaned in the sink. This might seem like a hassle to clean, but it is going to avoid a lot of costly problems later on. You can simply scrape it off the dishes and pans straight into the bin.



Coffee Grounds

After you have made your morning coffee, what do you do with the grounds? A lot of people simply wash them away when they are cleaning the dishes. But, this is something that you do not want to do. The reason for this is, coffee grounds do not break down. In other words, they can cling to the inside of your pipes and cause a blockage.

So, why washing away coffee grounds can seem like something that is not a big deal, it can actually do a lot of harm. It is best to put as much of the coffee grounds in the bin as possible. In fact, there are also a few fun things you can do with coffee grounds. This includes using them to exfoliate the skin.
