Here's How You Prepare your Family Home for Winter

Winter is just around the corner, so now is a better time than ever for you to start preparing your home. A few small changes can really save you a lot of time later, not to mention that it could save you a small fortune in repairs.

Weatherproofing

You need to make sure that your home is ready to handle the cold that is yet to come. Consider checking over your doors and even your windows. You need to look out for any gaps or even areas that may cause a draft. If you do see any gaps or if you feel a slight breeze when you run your hand over the seal, then caulk is an excellent solution. You can do it all yourself and this can save you a fortune in energy bills. You may even want to get your windows replaced as well as this can really boost the value of your href="https://www.mommacuisine.com/blog/how-to-create-a-winter-worthy-home"> home.

Reverse all of your Fans

Turning your fans clockwise is the key to saving money when the cold hits. The idea is that it will stop the hot air from rising, so it keeps it right where you need it to be, in the centre of the room. A lot of ceiling fans will have a switch that you can use to try and reverse it. If you want to use this trick then clean the fan down and also make sure that the electrics are still in working order as well. After all, ceiling fans are notorious for building up grime and the last thing you need is this blowing all over your room.

Fireplace Inspections

People tend to use their fires most in winter. If you have not had a chimney inspection done recently or if you have not had your fireplace cleaned out in the last year or two then it is so important that you get this done. It’s also a good idea for you to check the flue on your chimney as well, as this will stop a draft from making its way through your home. While you are doing this, it’s worth giving your air conditioning a check over as well, to see if you need to look into central air repair.

Freezing Pipes

Frozen pipes can cause you a ton of issues. If you want to stop them from getting too cold then keep the heat on at all times. You should also turn on all the faucets in your home so that they release a drop of water every few seconds. This won't hurt your water bill but it can make it much harder for pipes to freeze.

Clean your Gutter

A lot of people don’t see the point in clearing out the gutter in winter because they aren’t going to be outside. If you have a lot of clogged leaves and debris however then this can weigh it down. If water freezes in your gutter then this will make it even heavier, which can cause the entire gutter to drop down. You don’t want to be dealing with this over the festive period, so get this sorted out as soon as you can.
