Hidden Dangers In Your Favorite Foods!

Even though they might slip up from time to time, the vast majority of people, who say that they do what they can in order to eat as healthily as possible. Even if occasionally eat something that's not exactly great for them, most people are still fairly concerned with only putting decent things into their bodies. Or at least that what they think. The problem is that many people simply don't realize what goes into a lot of the food that they eat. You might try and avoid some foods because you're aware of the ingredients in it, but there are just as many foods that you might think are perfectly healthy, but that actually content some seriously scary and harmful ingredients. With that in mind, here are the hidden dangers in some of your favorite foods.

Butylated Hydroxytoluene

bowl, breakfast, cereal bowl

Does this ingredient sound particularly familiar? Probably not. But whether you've heard of it or not, you've very likely heard about some of the things that it's used for. As well as being used in many seemingly healthy breakfast cereals where it's used to prevent oxidation in order to help them last longer, BHT is also used as a major ingredient in both jet fuel and embalming fluid! Several studies have shown that this ingredient is a "known carcinogen" as well as being harmful to the liver. BHT is also harmful to water supplies and is often kept away from them.

Dimethylpolysiloxane

Once again this is a substance with a complex scientific name that you might know by a more common name. Dimethylpolysiloxane is one of the main ingredient found in silly putty. It's a form of silicone that's also used in everything from caulking to hair products. This ingredient is often found in a lot of fast food restaurants. There are a lot of dangers to this ingredient including the fact that it can break down into compounds that contain formaldehyde! You can find more on dimethylpolysiloxane dangers here: http://stoppoisoningus.org/dimethylpolysiloxane/. It's amazing to think that this kind of ingredient is still legally allowed in food but it certainly gives yet another reason to avoid fast food!

Saltwater injections

This is one of those things that might not sound quite as dramatic as some of the more scientifically named ingredients earlier on this list, but can be just as harmful! Just about everyone is aware of just how dangerous too much salt can be, playing a part in high blood pressure as well as a whole host of other serious health problems. And yet, as part of a process known as "plumping" salt water is commonly injected into many foods in order to increase the weight and therefore increase the price. Things like chicken breasts are the most common places you'll find large amounts of injected salt water. Because of this, it's a good idea to get your meat from a reputable butcher rather than the supermarket since a butcher is much less likely to pump their meat full of sea water for the sake of making a little extra profit!
