How To Keep Eating Healthy In Winter

Winter seems to be one of the most challenging seasons of the year to keep eating healthy, as most of the foods you can have on your diet are not fresh, and usually richer in fat than what you can indulge in during summer, for instance. But there are ways to keep yourself healthy and your weight in check, even with freezing temperatures outside.

Enjoy fruits that are in season
Even if they are brought from overseas, some fruits you can consume in winter are fresh. For instance, kiwi, mandarins, grapefruit, and vitamin C rich oranges can all be had in winter without a problem. Any grocery store carries them, so make sure to have some to eat every day.

Don’t forget about veggies
Some vegetables will remain fresh enough over winter, and they should be part of your winter diet. Broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots are hardy enough to stay good throughout the winter months, and they should be on your plate.

Whether you pick a vegetable soup to cook or you prefer a veggie stew, there are many ways to integrate these healthy foods that are a must for your health. They are rich in vitamins and minerals, and they can be quickly cooked for a winter diet filled with goodness.

Trim fat off meats
Winter is the season when you have a lot of protein in the form of various meats. The one advice that you should follow would be to trim the fat off the meat you cook, to limit the intake of this type of food. While you may burn some calories enjoying winter sports, whether you grab your snowboarding knee pads and your snowboard to hit the slopes, or you like skating, fat is still a no-no.

Work on your portions to avoid overeating
In winter, it is normal to have as side dishes a lot of foods that can make you gain weight, such as potatoes, rice, and pasta. If in summer, it is okay to have a large plate filled with salad, that’s not the same portion you should apply for mash potatoes.

Take out the smallest plates you have and use them for any meal of the day. The foods mentioned above are rich in calories, but the temptation to overeat is there. So make sure that you have as little as possible from them. If you still feel a little hungry, don’t ask for seconds, and wait a little. You will see that the satiety effect will hit.

Have proper fiber intake
Your digestive system needs to stay healthy in any season, and winter is no exception to the rule. Introduce more kidney beans, lentils, soybeans, or chickpeas, to ensure that you have a lot of fiber. The good news is that such foods are also a decent source of protein, so, if you don’t like to eat meat too much, you can rely on them instead.

At the same time, make sure to limit salt. It’s not good for your body, and especially your heart in any season, and in winter, you need just a little more attention.
