{lifestyle} McDonald's Pink Slime - I'm Lovin'...Whaaa?!!

The picture above has been all over the news as reports of McDonald’s stating that they will no longer use the pink slime filler in their burgers have made headlines across the country.

In the McDonald’s website, their Media Statement says:

Discontinued Use of Select Lean  Beef Trimmings SLBT

“At McDonald’s, the quality and safety of the food we serve our customers is  a top priority.

At the beginning of 2011, we made a decision to discontinue the use of ammonia-treated beef in our hamburgers.  This product has been out of our supply chain since August of last year. This decision was a result of our efforts to align our global standards for how we source beef around the world.

We are always reviewing and evolving our standards to ensure we continue to serve safe, high quality food to our customers.”

This is  so disturbing, wrong, and inhumane on so many different levels. So, great, they are taking it out of their burgers. Well what about their chicken nuggets, fish fillets, “milk” shakes…what’s in those?? I think we, the public have the right to know. And YOU should want to find out.

The problem is, that for many millions of people, eating fast-food is not the occasional treat it was once. It’s woven into everyday lives.

Last Friday, it was announced that I, as well as many other food blog partners around the country have become Real Food Advocate’s for Food Revolution, founded by Jamie Oliver. At the same time that this was announced, I received Chicagoan, Sarah Wu’s book Fed Up With Lunch. It’s a real story of a Chicago teacher who started an “undercover” blog under the name Mrs. Q, where her mission was to eat school lunch for the entire school year and document it on her blog.

My own mission as Momma Cuisine and show families that Great Everyday Meals can be done with simple ingredients and basic cooking techniques, cannot be more clear. Food education is IMPORTANT and a great necessity in life.

Watch this great episode of Food Revolution and see how just one family is affected by the fast-food mentally and eating habit.

*A copy of Fed Up With Lunch by Sarah Wu was sent to me to review by Chronicle Books.

*I will be following up this blog post with a list of some amazing organizations in Chicago, who are supporting and heading the local movement of teaching the community about cooking and eating healthy!
