WHY IT MATTERS?
Did you know that 25% of Chicago’s children are overweight or obese. A newly released study from Chicago public health officials shows child obesity rates in the city are well above the national average of 17 percent (CDC). In Chicago’s low-income communities, the obesity rates for children may be as high as 70%.
These children are at greater risk of respiratory illness, diabetes, and heart disease, among other conditions. Obese children are also more likely to be obese as adults.
A recent study at Stanford University demonstrated the importance of nutrition education. Researchers found that nutrition education causes children to consume two times more veggies during their snack time. Check out the article and learn more about the study here.
Purple Asparagus is working to fight this epidemic, but we can’t do it alone. Please join us. Your donation will enable Purple Asparagus to introduce even more kids across Chicago to food that is healthy AND delicious. For more information about making a gift, please click here.
