The Weight Watcher’s Guide to the Best Dunkin’ Donuts Hot and Iced Coffee Drinks
A visit to Dunkin’ Donuts isn’t necessarily a bad thing when
you limit your coffee orders to these healthier options.
A quick visit to Dunkin’ Donuts is always a good idea, at
any time of the day. You can get your morning fix of java or a caffeine boost
for energy during the afternoon. Some Dunkin’ Donuts are even open late at
night (or 24 hours) so you can drop by for some wake-up coffee when you’re
working on an all-nighter assignment.
A regular coffee is
only $1.69, so the price is quite reasonable. But if you’re watching your
weight, then perhaps a visit to Dunkin’ Donuts may not be all that good of an
idea. Even if you only want some coffee (and not some of the calorie-laden donuts),
some of the drinks here may still come with too many calories.
However, if you stick with the following options, you should
be okay:
The Best Hot Coffee Drinks
When it’s the early morning or if it’s cold out, you need
hot coffee to really wake up your senses.
Espresso, No Sugar
The taste is great, as the Arabica beans used here offer a
bold and smooth flavor. You get some sweet caramel to offset the bittersweet
chocolate taste.
The good news is that at is, you only get 5 calories with
just 5mg of sodium. There’s no fat or sugar to worry about. Even if you do add
some sugar, it won’t be that bad. A single teaspoon of sugar adds only 16
calories.
Hot Coffee with Whole Milk, Unsweetened
It’s a simple drink, but it’s the more complicated beverages
that you should be worrying about if you’re watching your weight. This option
comes with whole milk, but that only increases the total calories to just 30
calories. Again, you don’t have any fat or sugar to worry about.
Hot Americano
An Americano is basically espresso diluted with more water.
This version uses 2 shots of espresso. It’s even certified by the Rainforest Alliance, just in
case you have any environmental concerns.
You get a truly rich flavor, along with caffeine that’s
great for more energy in the afternoon. It only comes with 10 calories, with no
sugar and no fat.
Coffee with Almond Milk, No Sugar
Replacing the regular coffee with a healthier variant is
always a good idea, and this version reduces the calorie to content to only 25
calories. You also get only half a gram of fat with 2g of sugar, and a not-bad
45,g of sodium.
Coffee with Skim Milk, No Sugar
This comes with just 20 calories and 2g of sugar, along with
a tolerable level of 25mg of sodium. Again, if you need sugar, you should just
add a bit of it yourself. The regular sugared version of this drink comes with
6½ teaspoons of sugar. One or two teaspoons aren’t all bad, with 16 calories
per teaspoon. But the 6.5 teaspoons of sugar will give you 104 calories, which
isn’t as good at all.
Espresso, with Sugar
You can order sweetened espresso if you’re in a rush, and
Dunkin’ just adds the sugar for you so you don’t waste time. At least they only
put in about 3 teaspoons of coffee, resulting in 60 calories and 14g of sugar.
Those levels aren’t all that bad, considering the alternatives.
Best Iced Drinks
The iced coffee versions here are great during the summer,
or even just after lunch when hot coffee may just make things too warm for you.
The key here is to specify the unsweetened versions of these drinks, to make
sure you’re not getting too much sugar in your beverages.
Cold Brewed with Cream, Unsweetened
This comes with 90 calories, which is still on the safe side
considering that other drinks come with more than 200 calories. The 9g of fat,
45mg of sodium, and 2g of sugar won’t really worry even your nutritionist.
Iced Macchiato with Skim Milk, No Sugar
Macchiato
is basically espresso with steamed milk. Specify skim milk for this drink along
with the 2 shots of espresso, and you’re okay. You reduce the load to just 70
calories, with no fat and 9g of sugar. The 100mg of sodium may give you some
pause, but it’s not all that bad.
Iced Coffee with Skim Milk, No Sugar
This is a great summer drink, and it’s ideal for hot
mornings. It contains just 20 calories, with no fat, 2g of sugar, and only 35mg
of sodium. You can even add a teaspoon or two, with 16 calories added per
teaspoon.
Cold Brew with Original Flavor, No Sugar
Without the sugar, you only get 5 calories here, along with
zero fat and zero sugar. Even the sodium content is minimal at 15mg.
Making your own Cold Brew can be a bit complicated, and
Dunkin’ does it just right. The process includes extracting the coffee flavors
by steeping the 100% Arabica beans in cold water for 12 straight hours.
Final Words
Limit your drinks to these excellent beverages, and your nutritionist won’t have the urge to scream at you!
