3 Strategies To Keep Your Bedroom Cool At Night During A Hot Summer
Have you ever got into your bedroom after a tough day, ready to fall asleep and relax, only to check the thermostat and see that it’s hotter in this room than anywhere else? It’s a common occurrence during the summer, and your bedroom usually ends up as the hottest room in the house because it’s on the top floor and gets bombarded from above by the sun while heat rises from the lower levels of your home up to the top throughout the day.
It results in you feeling like an icicle melting in bed at night, so how do you stop this from happening and keep your bedroom cool at night? Normally, you have three strategies to aim for, and the best results include a combination of all three.
#1 Install Air Conditioning
An AC unit will keep your bedroom cool and regulate its temperature, and there are two main options you can use in this situation:
A permanent AC unit
A portable AC unit
Permanent units are built into your home and will remain in place at all times. They’re a good choice if you get a lot of hot weather and will use the AC for a decent chunk of the year. If that’s the case, then this type of unit must be installed by proper heating and air specialists to ensure every component works correctly.
Portable units look a bit like dehumidifiers but come with a hose that you have to hang outside the window. Some portable air conditioners are a lot more effective than others, but they do a decent job of cooling a room down in the summer - and then you can tuck them away until you need them. They’re also cheaper and don’t require any additional work to be done on your house, but they’ll never be as effective as a proper AC unit.
Turn your AC on during the day - and maybe set it on a timer to remain on for the first hour or two while you sleep. You don’t want it on throughout the night, as it can dry out your nose and make you feel like you’re coming down with a cold.
#2 Keep Your Bedroom Shaded
Bedrooms get really hot when exposed to sunlight, so if you keep yours in the shade, it will be cooler come nighttime. Draw the curtains and blinds to start, but also consider installing external shutters to block out the sun before it hits the window. This is a secret hack that not many people do, yet it works wonders.
#3 Only Open The Windows If It’s Cool Outside
Don’t open your bedroom windows during the day because you think this lets fresh air in and cools the room down. It will only cool your bedroom down when it’s cooler outside than it is inside. With that in mind, you’re probably only opening the windows at night. Keep them closed throughout the day and let your AC unit regulate the temperature for optimal comfort.
If you keep your windows closed in the evening because you want the AC to work, then always be sure you open them first thing in the morning just to circulate the fresh air a bit. This helps you keep clean air in your home so it doesn’t get too muggy or musty.
Use these three strategies however you see fit to keep your bedroom cool and stop it from feeling like the middle of the sun. It will allow you to relax in the evenings and get a good night’s sleep despite the heat outside.
