Your attic space is very useful, giving you somewhere to store a lot of stuff that you can't find space for elsewhere. It can even be converted into extra living space if you want a way to make the most of it. However, your attic can also be the very definition of "out of sight, out of mind". When you put something up in the attic, you don't have to look at it. That can mean you end up with a lot of stuff up there that all becomes disorganized and messy. When it's time to clear out your attic, it can be a big task. But if you approach it methodically, you can get the job done.

Get Everything Out

It's usually a good idea to take everything out of your attic if you want to organize it. While you could go into the attic and start sorting things out from there, it can be difficult in what is often a cramped space. Trying to even get a clear idea of what's up there might be tricky, especially if you don't have good lighting and everything is disorganized. By bringing your stuff down from the attic, you can lay it out and get a good look at everything.

Removing them properly is important, especially if you want to ensure you're aware of any protected species and that you remove pests humanely. Clean Up

While your attic is empty, it's the perfect time to clean up. You can go over everything to clean and dust the whole attic. A vacuum cleaner can help you to get into all of the small spaces and make sure everything is clean. It also gives you a chance to check and see if there are any problems in the attic. Now you have everything out of the attic, you can get a good look at it and start sorting it out. Try sorting your things into different categories to make it easier. Start by deciding what you want to keep and what has to go, whether you are going to recycle, sell, donate or trash it. Then consider categorizing things by purpose or season so that you can find things more easily when you want to get something out of the attic.
