Learn DIY Tips and Tricks from Experienced Cooks, Farmers and Gardeners at The Good Food Festival


FamilyFarmed invites you to a family-friendly day of inspiring speakers, DIY workshops on the Organic Valley Good Food Commons, chef demos from Rick Bayless and Paul Kahan, a special ham curing session with Rob Levitt of the Butcher & Larder, plus the interactive Purple Asparagus Kids’ Corner.


In the past few weeks, we’ve highlighted the fun you can have with kids at the interactive Purple Asparagus Kids’ Corner, and inspired you to learn a new culinary skill at Rob Levitt’s ham curing workshop. Now check out all of the activities at the Organic Valley Good Food Commons!


The Organic Valley Good Food Commons will have have six tracks to choose from. All tracks are produced by the Festival’s wonderful partners, Advocates for Urban Agriculture (AUA), Chi Chickens, Chicagoland Food Co-Op Coalition and Edible Alchemy.

Raise Your Own

Learn how to raise chickens, bees, goats, quails and ducks! Backyard livestock enthusiasts will show you how.


Grow Your Own

Find out how to start your own backyard garden, identify the beneficial insects and other pests you might find as you plant and harvest, plus learn to grow and incorporate edible flowers into your culinary adventures. Then head over to the Peterson Garden Project Seed Swap at the Festival to pick up seeds to get started.


Compost It

The average family produces six pounds of kitchen scraps each week! Learn how to take waste from your kitchen, garden and yard and turn it into nutrient rich compost.

Preserve It

Learn about the benefits and techniques of preserving foods. Find out how to ferment vegetables to make kimchi, sauerkraut, cortido, and Indian pickles!


Make Your Own

Sharpen your kitchen skills, discover culinary curiosities and other creative cooking topics.From making your own pasta to learning how to make your own lip balm, there is something for everyone in this track!


Community Building

Learn about organizations that build community and food literacy through growing, cooking, selling, eating and educating people about food. Find out about successful community projects such as food swaps, co-ops, and how food can be used as medicine.
