Momma Cuisine's List of Emergency Food Supplies

Images of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is all over the television and internet. The devastation and chaos left behind, with people scrambling to find food, water, shelter and heat begs the question, "Are you and your family ready to supply yourselves with the basics, if an emergency of this kind happens to you??"

According to a survey by Claims Journal, "The majority of Americans (62 percent)... say they have not prepared an emergency kit.

"Families should consider putting together a well-stocked first-aid kit as well as a disaster-supply kit and keeping them in easy-to-access places. The disaster-supply kit should contain a supply of water and ready-to-eat, non-perishable foods, a weather radio, traveler’s checks or cash, important papers, personal hygiene items, blankets, extra clothes and shoes.

I admit, my family doesn't have an emergency kit of this kind. We have an evacuation plan, but lack the things mentioned above. This changes today.

Stocking up on food before a disaster can help you and your family ride out hard times when grocery stores are out of food or closed, and there is no potable water. Though many canned foods may not seem ideal for everyday life, during a disaster when food is sparse, canned foods can afford you essential nutrients that you and your family would lack otherwise.

Here is my basic list of emergency food supplies.

  • Water - A gallon per person. Up to 5 days worth
  • Canned Meats - Tuna, Chicken, Spam, Sausages
  • Canned Vegetables - Beans, Green Beans, Carrots, Peas, Potatoes, etc.
  • Powdered or Canned Milk - Soy Milk, Almond Milk, Rice Milk, Powdered Milk, Evaporated Milk
