Safety Tips For Your Kids

When it comes to your family, safety is the most important thing for you all to be paying attention to. If you go on a vacation with the kids, you make sure that they are safe in transit and your mind immediately goes to a million risk issues and ways to mitigate those issues before they become a thing.

Teaching the children about their safety from the beginning is vital if you want them to remain safe wherever you go together. It starts from the moment you tell them no to sticking their fingers near outlets and it carries on to completing their first CPR certification when they’re old enough to get it. There really is no reason to make these the only safety rules, however, as there is so much more to learn where safety is concerned for your children. You have to teach them how to be safe in an emergency so that they know how to carry themselves when there’s a problem. With this in mind, here are some of the ways that you can teach your children to be safe:

  1. Teach them to call the emergency services. Your children need to learn that the police and the emergency services are not a scary prospect. They have to learn how to pick up the phone and call the right people if there is an emergency. They have an amazing capacity to learn, and it starts with knowing how to get the help they need in a pinch.

  2. Teach them to put pressure on a cut. Kids cut their hands and knees all the time when they are playing and if you teach them that the best thing that they can do is to add pressure to the cut, they’ll learn how to stem their own bleeding before they get to a grown up. Of course, this is all within reason!

  3. Stop, drop and roll. There aren't many kids who grow up without knowing this rule: if there is any clothing on fire for your kids, stop, drop and roll on the ground to put the fire out. This is a key skill and teaching your kids not to panic is so important! Fire is scary enough without your children being unaware of the dangers. If they understand how to stop what they’re doing, and roll on the ground to put the fire out, there is less chance the injuries will be too much.

  4. Smoke alarm drills. Speaking of fire, do your children know what to do in the event the fire alarms go off in the house? It can help you to run them through smoke alarm drills so that they know how to behave, where to wait and what to do without panicking or worrying.

  5. Teach them to swim. You don't have to pay for fancy swimming lessons if you prefer to choose a group option, but swimming lessons are a must - particularly if you live near water! Swim safety is vital and you should do all that you can to provide this gift to your kids.
