Many of us grew up with Tupperware in the home. It had a variety of purposes, from keeping food fresh to keeping the children’s toys organised. Still today, if you visit your parents’ home and open one of the drawers, you will sure find a Tupperware bowl or two. Tupperware has a long history and through the years it has been a popular product in millions of homes because of its many functions. But is it old-fashioned or do people still make use of good ol’ Tupperware?

Where did Tupperware come from?

Tupperware was developed in 1942 by Earl Tupper. The first branded products were released and sold to the public by 1948. It quickly became a hit with homemakers around the world; it was a marvellous product that was both durable and affordable. No longer did families have to throw out leftovers, it could now be saved in a Tupperware bowl! People also moved away from glass and opted for the safer Tupperware glasses, bowls and plates.

The word ‘Tupperware’ is often used when referring to any plastic container products. However, it is a specifically designed and made product that carries the original brand name.

Do people still use Tupperware?

In the 1950s, Tupperware was a big deal. In fact, people were so fond of this new plastic product, that they had so-called ‘Tupperware parties’. A Tupperware party was a small, intimate event usually held at a Tupperware salesperson’s home to showcase the latest products in the range. The host or hostess would then invite close friends, neighbours and family members to browse the range and buy the products.

Today, Tupperware parties are mostly a thing of the past. However, this doesn’t mean that Tupperware is old news. Tupperware is now sold in 100 countries and millions of products from the range is sold every year. The Tupperware tradition has certainly carried over to new generations and the brand has become a household name in modern households.

What is Tupperware used for?

Tupperware was first designed as containers for food. The first product, designed by Earl Tupper, was actually a bowl-shaped plastic container designed specifically to carry food. However, through the years, Tupperware has designed a large variety of products for almost any use. Today, alternative uses include:

Use as containers for accessories

Tupperware is a great alternative to store accessories in. The see-through Tupperware containers with fixed lids make for the best accessory holders. It keeps your desk organised and you will be able to find items quickly and easily.

Use as a First Aid Kit

A bigger container can easily be used as a First Aid Kit. It can be carried easily, and it is waterproof, keeping your First Aid items dry and undamaged.

Use for pets’ food and water bowls

Tupperware makes great food and water bowls for your dogs or cats. Not only is it durable, but it is also affordable enough should it be replaced. Remember that sharp little teeth will be able to bite through the plastic, so keep away from dogs who are prone to gnaw!

Use as a bin

A deep Tupperware container can easily be used as a bin in children’s rooms or in the car. Having a container with a lid makes it even better, as contents will be kept in place.

Where can you find Tupperware?

Tupperware is still a sought-after brand in millions of homes around the world. Not only is it used for food and drinks, but it has range of alternative uses. Today, however, it can be quite pricey to buy the real deal. It is, therefore, wise to browse online to find Tupperware specials. On a website such as Kimbino, you’ll find the latest Tupperware catalogues with excellent deals. According to Kimbino, Tupperware “has one of the strongest positions in the South African market”. Therefore, shoppers are still very fond of this brand!

Tupperware has come a long way; from the first bowl-shaped plastic product made by Earl Tupper, to the stunning salad bowls and beautiful wine glasses you get today. Very few homes nowadays do not have Tupperware somewhere in their cupboards and even though it has become a bit pricey, people still flock to stores to get the latest Tupperware range. Tupperware may be old, but it is definitely here to stay.
