Why It's Time To Do Something Unexpected In Your Life

Imagine for a moment if everything in your life was mapped out and you knew exactly what was going to happen in the future. At first blush, it might seem quite reassuring. After all, most people spend their entire lives striving for security (and never getting there).

But as you lived with the knowledge, something strange would start to happen. You’d begin to crave the unexpected – the things that come out of left field. You’d long for something to shake up your boring predictable existence instead of always knowing what’s going to happen next.

When you think about it, the best experiences of your life are unexpected. Things like meeting the partner of your dreams, getting lost in a city and finding somewhere interesting, or discovering that your social media account is wildly popular.

These things don’t happen because you plan things that way. Instead, they unfold spontaneously, as a manifestation of the motive force that underlies everything.

Changes in your day-to-day experiences make life more fun. Routines are okay (and they are great for people who struggle to make the right choices in life). But there is a limit. Sometimes, you need a change of pace: something that’s really going to appeal to you.

So what can you do? One idea is to learn a new skill. For example, you might go for surf lessons and become one of those cool people at the beach who can ride the waves.

Another idea is to travel somewhere new and start a new life with new people. Again, it’s crazy, but it’ll lead to all sorts of new adventures you’d never have before.

Then there’s switching jobs or starting a new online community or changing what you eat. All these things can lead to places you never imagined before, proving that life doesn’t have to be repetitive or boring.

Many of the most successful people in life move from moment to moment without really considering their routine at all. They don’t know what time they went to bed or what they ate for breakfast. Instead, they engage with the “here and now.”

If you look at the lives of many of the most innovative people, this is how they live. They’re incredibly open-minded about how they structure their time, and they’re not so bothered about the minutiae of life. When things change, they embrace and enjoy it. It’s what they like.

Becoming like this requires a change in habit. Instead of always focusing on the future, try shifting your gaze to the present. Think about what you can do right now to have a great life instead of always pushing it off to the future.

What you’ll discover is that you actually have far more power than you imagine. You’re able to do things that nobody else can do because you are leveraging the power of the present. You’re not worrying about what tomorrow will bring because you are having so much fun today. Moreover, you’re trusting yourself to make choices that will bring a brighter future, rather than worrying about security all the time.
