Check The Garage, Basement And Attic

First, you should make sure that you are checking areas like the garage, the basement, the attic and any sheds in the garden. Why are these areas important to check out? If a previous homeowner has left things behind, this is usually where you’ll find it. They can leave things behind for a variety of reasons. It could be accidental or they may have rubbish that they don’t want to take and that they can’t be bothered to get rid of. If you find yourself in a situation like this, then it’s important to take the right action. You can contact the previous owner and if they don’t respond you may want to take legal action to claim the cost of a cleanup.

Change The Locks

Next, you should make sure that you are changing the locks when you are moving into your new home. This might seem like paranoia. However, the reality is that if you don’t change the locks you have no idea who still has keys and who can still access the home. It’s possible that there are multiple people who have keys and it’s not just the former owners. They might have passed keys onto friends, neighbors and extended family. There’s no way to tell. A skilled locksmith will be able to change the locks for you without any issues.

Clean It Thoroughly

Something else to consider when you move into a new home is how clean it is and how clean you would like it. It is always a nice idea to get rid of the old owner's scents and debris. If they had a pet, then there may be hairs floating around which is both unsightly and not great for your lungs. If you don’t have the time to clean it yourself then you could always hire a professional cleaner to come in and do it for you. Better yet, you could hire a cleaner before you move into the property.

Meet The Neighbors

Finally, even before you move into your new home it is a good idea to meet the neighbors and make yourself known to them. When you come to look at the home, knock and ask the neighbors what the area is like. The most honest people will be your neighbors, if there are noisy ones or drunk ones then you will be the first to be told. Try and stay on good terms with your neighbors, you never know when you will need their help with something.

We hope this helps you understand some of the key steps that you should take when you move into your new home. By exploring the right options here, you can guarantee that your home feels like your home while also avoiding a situation where it’s vulnerable to a potential break-in.
