How To Get Rid Of Cooking Fumes Without An Extractor Fan

Cooking creates a lot of fumes and odors in the kitchen that spread throughout your home. The smell will be amazing while you are cooking food but it can linger afterward and leave a stale smell throughout your home. It’s especially bad when you are frying things or cooking food with a strong smell, like fish. A lot of the fumes from cooking can also affect air quality and harm your health. So, it’s important that you get rid of cooking fumes from your home.

Most people use an extractor fan or commercial exhaust fans for this but if your kitchen came without one or it is not possible to put one in, what can you do? The good news is, you can still stay on top of cooking fumes without an extractor fan, here’s how to do it.

Open The Windows

Ventilation is key if you want to prevent odors and fumes from cooking, so you should simply open a window. If you crack a window in the kitchen and another one at the other side of the house, you get a nice flow of air going through, so all of the fumes are pushed out and replaced with fresh air. The only problem is, you can’t really use this method in the winter unless you want to be freezing cold while cooking.

Maintain Your AC Unit

Even though you don’t have an extractor fan in the kitchen, you can still cycle the air in your home and remove bad smells with an AC unit. By filtering the air and pumping a constant flow of fresh air into the home, AC units clean the cooking fumes out and improve the air quality. However, you may not be getting the best out of your unit if the filters are clogged and damaged. So, make sure that you call an air conditioner repair company if you think that it may not be working properly. Make sure that you keep up with general maintenance like changing the filters regularly too. As long as your AC unit is in good working order, it can help you keep cooking fumes out of your home.

Simmer Citrus Peels

If you want a great trick for getting rid of bad odors, get yourself some lemons. If you simmer the peels in a pan of water for half an hour or so after cooking, the acid will neutralize the bad odors and replace them with a nice lemon smell. You can also use the same trick in your refrigerator by simply leaving half a lemon in a bowl in the back.

Deal With Food Waste Right Away

Often, the lingering smells don’t come from the food that you have cooked, they come from the waste that you throw away. It all sits in the bin and the smell will only get worse, so it’s important that you dispose of it properly as soon as you finish cooking. It’s a good idea to have a separate food waste bin that you can keep outside so you can reduce smells.

Don’t worry if you don’t have an extractor fan in your kitchen, just follow these simple steps and you can get rid of any bad cooking smells.
