We all want to get a little more adventure out of life and to travel a little more often. Usually, the barrier is one of two things: time and cost. Freeing up the time is something that you have to be ready to do, yourself, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy a little more freedom to explore at less cost. Here are just a few more affordable ways to enjoy a nice family adventure.

Get out into the wilderness

The camping trip is a traditional family time out that is, for some reason, not mentioned as often as it should be nowadays. The chance to eat, sleep, and spend time under the stars, to explore some local natural beauty, and maybe even to pass on a few skills like hunting or fishing can create an experience wholly removed from modern life. The most you’re going to spend on it is likely going to be buying a tent, too. Don't forget to bring a foraging bag so you can collect treasures along the way.

Get out on the road

Road trips are another tradition and one that can be some of the most engaging and eye-opening kinds of vacation you can imagine. When it comes to simple ways to make most of your weekend, taking a drive across a couple of states, taking in the sights, and enjoying little moments of calm mixed with the excitement of discovery can be a great way to do it. Look up some local road trip routes and make sure that you have the car that’s going to help you get there and back.

A lighter city break

A city break can help you cut out the costs of flights, which are usually some of the biggest expenses when it comes to traveling. However, staying in a hotel and treating yourself to the luxuries of city living can be costly on its own. You can help cut those costs by a significant degree if you’re willing to take a break in one of the lesser-visited cities throughout the country. There are plenty that aren’t quite as tourist trap-y and, while they might not offer quite as much to do as the Big Apples of the world, rarely is a good city going to leave you bored.

Be spontaneous

It might not be a good idea if you’re planning to travel with the children but if it’s just you or you and an adult companion or two, then you can always see what options come your way. Flights can get very cheap if the airline needs to sell seats and the flight is only a day or two away. If you can get organized in time, you can book a flight that’s due to leave in the next few days and find a hotel. Your choices will be limited, but those that do have space may not be charging as much for it.

You don’t need a big budget to create great memories with your family. Often, all you need is to get away from home and to experience something new. Hopefully, the ideas above give you some inspiration on how to get out there for less.
